How does the text follow the codes and convention of an advert?

The text follows many codes and conventions in the advert to promote the product. For example, the product itself is shown more than once to make the audience aware of the product, so then, they can recognise it if they want to purchase it. In addition the use of voiceover helps negotiate (reading) the usefulness of the products to the audience. Furthermore, the use of Non-diegetic; for example the strange background music at the beginning immediately grabs the audience attention and also used to flow with the fast short cuts of the advert. Cover work- Textual analysis (Ms Vandasanden)

London to Brighton
Media Forms: How does the trailer use media language to establish the film's genre?
This trailer uses many media languages to establish the film genre. For example quotes (“Blistering raw, utterly compelling drama”) from a popular newspaper like ‘The Times’ suggests to the audience that this film could address some violent scenes. And also the word ‘drama’ also tells the audience that the film genre or sub genre could be drama. (“brutally raw thriller with sharp serrated edges”) the use of words like “brutal” and “thriller” connotes to horror, violence, and death which is used tell the audience more about the theme in details.  In addition, the use of mise-en-scene is used to establish the film genre, almost all of the characters facial experission seemed like they were moody, depressed and unhappy which tells us this film haven’t got a comedy theme to it. Furthermore,   the use of gun and gunshot sounds illustrates that this film contains violence and also it could be about representing crime.
Moreover, the use of Non-diegetic sound from the beginning to the midpoint of the trailer creates a sympathy mood, which shows that this film could have some depressing scenes, this tells us that it’s a crime based film. When the non-diegetic sounds changes, the tempo of the music gets faster which connotes quick actions, this suggests that this film could have action sub genre. Similarly, less lighting is used in most of the scenes to create a dark atmosphere which links to ‘horror’ or ‘thriller ‘genre.
To sum up my points, by looking at the media languages used to establish the film genre; it tells us that the genre of this film could be “crime” and “thriller”.

Media Representations: How is gender represented in the trailer?
Women are represented negatively in this trailer, for example the young girl was used for prostitutions, this shows women’s were portrayed as a sexual object to men. In addition there’s was lady with a black eye in the trailer; this suggests that she was beaten up with no respect to the gender. Men were portraying powerful and dominant, they were represented with cash, violent weapons like gun...etc to portray them in a high status.  Most of the violence scenes were mostly beating up the two females, which could also suggest that women were represented weaker than males.
Furthermore, the lady was shown wearing scantily clothing; a short dress up to her knees and the girl was wearing cheap standard clothing whereas most of the men were wearing black clothing and formal suits, this also shows that men were presented in control, rich and powerful whereas women where represented weak, cheap  and scantily. This trailer followed stereotypical representation of men and women to point out certain issues in our society.

Media Institutions: In what ways is the film London to Brighton typical of a low budget British film?
The film of London to Brighton typical of a low budget British film; mainly because of the quality of the camera wasn’t high definition and the actors in the film are not popular to be recognised. In addition, the setting of the scenes doesn’t look very professional which shows less technology was used in this film. Furthermore, the editing of the trailer wasn’t done to the professional standard to create certain effects.

Media Audiences: In what ways does the trailer promote the film to its target audience?
The audience of this trailer is most likely to be British teenagers aged between 15-25 years old in C2DE socio-economic group because the film itself has a teenager who’s from low class background. The trailer promotes the film to the target audience by making it look like a real life story which could relate to them, since many teenagers in our society are running away home at a young age and faces many problems.
In addition the use of violence in the film could help promote the film to the male target audience, since most of them will have interests in violence, crime...Etc.
